Did you know that ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage your eyes if you don’t take the proper precautions? This is why Southwest Vision Centers recommends that everyone—especially children—wear sunglasses with UV protection whenever spending time outdoors. Read on as your expert children’s eye doctor explains why it’s so important for kids to wear sunglasses:

Sunglasses

Kids’ Eyes Are Still Developing

Your eyes’ natural lenses usually remain clear until you reach 10 years old. This transparency lets in maximum light entry, including UV rays, putting children at this age or younger at a greater risk of developing UV-related vision problems later on. Photokeratitis, macular degeneration, and cataracts are some of the diseases that are commonly linked to solar radiation.

In addition, the skin on children’s eyelids and around their eyes is more sensitive and delicate than that of adults. This means your children are more likely to develop dry eyes and eye sunburn. To safeguard your child’s visual health, we recommend bringing them in for a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. This way, we can easily detect any signs of UV-induced vision problems and provide prompt treatment before the condition advances.

Children Spend More Time Outside

Kids love playing outside, especially in the summer. Without protective sunglasses, the bright glare of the sun can overwhelm their fragile eyes.

Your trusted pediatric optometrist recommends wearing sunglasses that provide reliable UV-protective features. According to the American National Standard Institute, sunglasses need to be able to block up to 400 nanometers of UV rays. We also recommend wearing polycarbonate lenses, which are made of highly impact resistant materials to protect your kids’ eyes from injuries while they play. Let them choose a pair they like so they’ll be excited to wear them.
